Our mission is to encourage and support the spiritual and musical education of children and to serve the worship and arts communities of West Michigan.

October 2015

Because there are those who need to sing...

Because there are those who need to listen...

Your continued partnership helps the Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys to be both blessed and a blessing as we feed hearts and minds

Throughout GRCMB’s first quarter century of singing, our main inspiration    has been people’s hunger to be inspired, to be moved, and to feel deeply a sense of being valued by and belonging to this community we call West Michigan.

The Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys bears this responsibility by having Grand Rapids in our name. With humble pride we bear it in our hearts and carry it our voices as we live out our mission to serve both the musical and spiritual life of our community.

As I write to you today, GRCMB’s next quarter century has already begun, and we are preparing to once again live our mission. Without inspiration the best powers of the human mind remain dormant. There is a fuel in us that needs to be ignited with sparks. This is why our boys train so hard and each knows, along with the gentlemen, that everyone is responsible to carry his own weight. The sensitivity and quickness with which our boys master this music is amazing. You can do a lot if you are properly trained.

But, the arts aren’t just important because they improve math scores. “The arts are important because they speak to parts of children’s beings which are otherwise untouched.” (Ken Robinson)

Lessons and Carols 2015

December  2015

We have received many requests for the text of the 2015 Lessons and Carols introduction presented by GRCMB board members this month. The text is printed below.

 Lessons & Carols 2015 Welcome

On behalf of the Choir and its Board, we welcome you to our 26th Annual Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols.

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Tonight the choir through word and song will tell this Christmas story.

Our city is blessed by its commitment to the arts. Music in particular comes alive through the efforts of so many talented artists. Concert series offered by orchestras, chamber ensembles, choirs, opera and ballet companies make for a vibrant city.

The Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys is part of this dynamic fabric, but uniquely so, for the Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys offers its art to the Glory of God. The choir’s programs are not constructed and offered as concerts, but rather as reflections of the artistry of God, opening the way to an awareness of the mystery of God present in all things.

This is one of the great duties of faith…..to be the carrier of culture.

But when ministry becomes performance, then the sanctuary becomes a theater, the congregation becomes an audience, worship becomes entertainment. But when ministry is for the glory of God, His presence moves into the sanctuary and God is among us.

For over a quarter century now, the Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys has been in constant pursuit of excellence in order to be able to serve the musical and spiritual needs of our community.

Like all programs by the choir, this service of Lessons & Carols is being offered with free parking and free admission. We can only continue our gift to our city when you hold up the work of the choir in your prayers and in your financial giving. When the offering is taken tonight please give from your heart as you are able. The choir receives no corporate sponsorship, nor city or State support. Instead it depends on you our listeners for its existence.

Finally, also notice that there is a giving envelope in tonight’s program. Please take this home with you as you contemplate your final year end giving for 2015. Year-end giving gifts to the choir of Men & Boys are tax deductible and will enable us to plan more exciting programing and guest conductors for our 27th season. With your continued help, we will once again go out and create something beautiful, something wonderful – and do it to the glory of God!

Now, however, as the choir is entering the back of the cathedral, it is our turn to give our gift to you. So please silence your mobile devices, and prepare to hear again the message of the angels, and in heart and mind go even unto Bethlehem.
